Direct access to the real-time data the moorings in Isfjorden link.
The University Centre in Svalbard coordinated over the past years the development of an atmosphere and ocean observing system around Isfjorden
(The Iwin project).
Isfjorden is the largest fjord on the west coast of Spitsbergen, exposed to relatively high shipping activities as well as rapid change because of
the warming climate. In the Iwin project an automatic meteorological measurement network across Isfjorden has been established. These include
autonomous weather stations on lighthouses as well as mobile weather stations onboard fjord cruise ships.
In 2024 we started a pilot project to add surface wave and temperature observation from moored OpenMetBuoys to the Isfjorden observation network.
We deployed two moorings that measure the surface wave energy spectrum and the upper 2.5 meter of the ocean with 4 temperature sensors.
The data is sent in real-time and provided here. In addition, two temperature loggers
are mounted at the bottom and at 30 meter depths, respectively. The mooring in Sassenfjorden is operational since June 2024, while the one in
the center of Isfjorden has been deployed in September 2024.
As part of the IWOOS project (Isfjorden Weather and Ocean Observation System), funded by SIOS, we can sustain our efforts in Isfjorden and have been deploying five moorings in Isfjorden in May and June 2025 at depths between 100 and 200 meters. All moorings are equipped with a temperature string with 16 sensors distributed over the upper 10 meter. In addition, temperature loggers and CTD loggers are mounted on some of the moorings at the bottom and mid-section.
